This is an imitation of a graph I found here:

I got the consumer price index data from here:

   ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/cpi/cpiai.txt

I annotate an image of a dollar in to the area of the graph line, 
and then I annotate lines from the top border of the graph, down to
the cpi line, to obscure part of the dollar.  Since the data is very
dense, the lines blend in together, making a nice solid area.
